The management of Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) wishes to inform all selected candidates for Distance Learning Programme (DTP) appearing on the new list available (or click here to download it)on KIE website that their registration is scheduled from 21^st May to 4^th June 2013.

 Mode of registration:

1. Go to: www.kie.ac.rw
2. Click on: ONLINE REGISTRATION link
3. Go to New students link
4. Enter your Username and password, and then login.
5.  Enter Transaction numbers of your transaction pay slip of 47500 Rwf then SUBMIT.

NOTE that:

1. Registration fees are 47500 Rwf paid on KIE account No 0010013800790601 in ECOBANK.
2. Contribution of SUKIE is 1000 Rwf  paid on SUKIE account 0140013808017801 in ECOBANK.
3. Remember that your username is your PIN Number. If you don’t remember your password click on don’t remember password link and it will be sent into your e-mail that you gave during application period.
4. The payment is valid in our system after 24 hours, don’t register immediately after payment. Wait for the next day.

Announcement

The Management of Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) is pleased to inform the General Public that the registration of candidates for languages proficiency program in: English, French, Kiswahili and Kinyarwanda (Level I: Beginners, Level II: Intermediate and Level III: Advanced) is scheduled from Wednesday 22^nd May 2013 to 7^th June 2013.

A placement test will be administered to identify the level of every candidate on Monday 10^th June 2013.  Classes will start on Monday 17^th June 2013.

The Management of Kigali Institute of Education invites all newly registered Distance Education Programme students to an induction day at KIE on Saturday May 4, 2013 at 8:00 in the morning followed by an official launching of the programme.

The students will in addition receive study materials (modules).

To receive study materials, it is obligatory to first present a receipt of payment of ten thousand francs (10,000 RwF) for each of the modules they are to study in semester one. Payment is made to KIE’s account at ECOBANK and the pay-in slip is to be presented to Distance Training Programme office for acquisition of the study materials.

Anyone who does not pay for the modules will not be considered as a student.

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ADMISSION IN WEEKEND AND HOLIDAYS PROGRAMME OF BACHELOR  OF EDUCATION IN SCIENCE SUBJECTS

The management of Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) is pleased to inform interested private candidates willing to study during weekends and school holidays in the Bachelor of Education Programme in Science Subjects  (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Physical Education and Sports) that the period of online application has been extended until 10^th November 2012.

We take this opportunity to inform that now the minimum entry requirement in that programme is to have a certificate or diploma of advanced level (A2) in science subjects/combinations of Rwandan Secondary Schools or equivalent.

We will start by the following combinations: Biology-Chemistry-Education (BCE), Biology-Physical Education and Sports-Education (BPE), Mathematics – Physics -Education (MPE), Mathematics-Computer Science-Education (MCsE) and Physics-Chemistry-Education (PCE), but there is a possibility to offer other combinations.

The Minister of Education Hon. Dr. Vincent BITUTA met with students in order to share information on the new student loan scheme, the University of Rwanda and updates on the project of optimizing study duration of undergraduate programmes from 4 to 3 years.

During the visit, the Minister started by elucidating the long awaited issue of the new student loan scheme. He made clear that only students in categories 1-2 of Ubudehe would receive 100% loan to cover tuition fees and living allowance while students in categories 3-4 would only receive 50% for tuition costs but no loan for living allowances. Students in categories 5-6 will cater for themselves on all costs.

He further explained that the Government has been spending around 26 billion on the current loan scheme, however, with the new one the amount would be reduced to 16 billion. He added that the around 10 billion of saving would be invested into projects meant to boost the quality of education in institutions of higher learning.

According the Minister this new system will help to establish a sustainable students financing mechanism that will cope with the increased demand for tertiary education whilst maintaining quality and equity of access to tertiary education.

He also highlighted that the loans shall be allocated to skills programs in the order of priority as follows: Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Science, Education, and Humanities. The students in TVET shall have 2 years like it is done in Tumba College of Technology, instead of 3 years. The duration of the Bachelors Degree programme is also to reduce from 4 to 3 years.

As far as the University of Rwanda is concerned, Dr. Biruta said that the project of merging all public Institutions of Higher Learning into one entity is in its final stages. According to him, the project would be launched by September, 2013. He highlighted the fact that the merger would facilitate to reduce the problem of duplication of programmes in public institutions of higher learning as well as helping them to maintain the standard student population.

Students in the meeting expressed their concerns about the new programmes especially the one pertaining to the loan scheme. One student revealed that UBUDEHE programme which is the basis for determining student's qualification to the loan is abused by local leaders in the quest to gain much praise in their performance contracts.

"This programme is hampered by local leaders who provide false information by putting people in categories to which they don’t belong and we are surely going to be victims of this malpractice," he said.

The Minister reassured students that all the issues raised will be taken into consideration and urged them to harness the positive attitude to face new challenges and have commitment to complete their studies.

Kigali Institute of Education hosted a delegation from the National Electoral Commission (NEC) in line with the upcoming Rwanda parliamentary election. The session was conducted by The Executive Secretary of NEC Mr. Charles Munyaneza.

Speaking during the lecture, Munyaneza made clear that all elections are geared by the quest for democracy and good governance which are, according to him the key pillars of development of any country.

"Democracy should be a stake to every citizen since they are the ones who contribute to put leaders in positions," he said.

He added that NEC opted to reach out people in the academic community because many of them are the leaders of the next generation.

Munyaneza took participants through the activities that will be conducted prior to the day of elections. He said that the training of volunteers is a prime aspect of good implementation of election exercise.

During the lecture, participants commended the initiative by NEC and called on more similar sessions to be organized in normal periods in a bid to equip Rwandans with current and future affairs of the country.

In his closing remarks, Munyaneza urged students to participate in various lectures and open up their minds with a view to gaining general knowledge on the elections and other issues that inform them on how the country is governed. He also urged them to endeavor to be channels through which values and principles of democracy can reach the general public.

The long serving senior lecturer at the Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) died on Monday, 6th on his way to work.

Born in Matyazo, Ngororero District, Dr. Jean de Dieu Baziruwiha, 49, was the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences in the Institute.

He is survived by a wife and three children.

In 1989 Baziruwiha acquired his Masters degree in Science; Physics and Mathematics with specialization in Physics from Patrice Lumumba People's Friendship University, Moscow. In the same University in 1994 he obtained his PhD in Physics and Mathematics with Specialization in Theoretical Physics and Statistical Theory of solids.

He was a member of KIE Board of Directors as Deans'representative. He was also serving as the chairman of the finance, administration and Investment committee in the said Board.

The Causes of the tragic demise are yet to be determined; he has been taken to KANOMBE Military hospital for a post mortem examination. He has been in KIE since 2000.

Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) through the Faculty of Arts and Languages held a one day workshop in line with paying tribute to Rwandan writers. The workshop featured different presentations from renowned lecturers in literature who took participants through the publications of prominent Rwandan writers.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Wenceslas NZABALIRWA praised the workshop about the literature which according to him has always been the core element of Rwandan culture. He said this in reference to the likes of Alexis Kagame, Saverio Nayigiziki, Jean Baptiste Mutabaruka, who are reckoned as pioneers of Rwandan literature. Nzabalirwa urged participants to recognize and emulate the work of present and past artists so that their efforts will not be in vain.

"It is in our duty to uphold our ancient tradition and value the work done by local writers. This reflects our socio-cultural values and showcase our national identity" He said. He also expressed his gratitude to the Faculty of Arts and languages especially the Department of Literature for having organized such a valuable workshop devoted to the Rwandan literature.

Most of the event's presentations were underpinned by the analysis of some literary works by late Rwandan writers like Alex KAGAME, Cyprian RUGAMBA, and those who are still alive like Francois Xavier GASIMBA, Jean Marie KAYISHEMA who are respectively the lecturers at KIE.

Dr Frank TANGANIKA is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts and Languages and presented on Mr. John RUSIMBI's novels. He said that Rusimbi has proved his worth as the pioneer of Rwandan English novel following his full lengthy novels in English language.

Talking about the importance of the workshop, Tanganika said that paying tribute to Rwandan writers is very crucial since Rwandans recognize the significance of their contribution to the society which will ultimately lead to the development of national literature.

Students who attended the workshop were satisfied with the material presented as it has helped to learn more about Rwandans contribution about their literature and inspired them to read about local writings.

"It was with great importance to learn about different writers from my country who wrote in my country' context and it has been an inspiration to read and appreciate Rwandan literature," witnessed one student.

Closing the seminar, Dr Cyprien NIYOMUGABO the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Languages, said that the faculty is really committed and has started to get rid of some false saying like the one that goes 'If you want to hide something to Africans put it in writing' by paving the way to the culture of reading and writing.

The workshop dubbed 'Tribute to Rwandans Writers'. It brought together lecturers, students from local universities and other organizations that have stake in Rwandan literature. It intended to promote the culture of reading and writing and paying tribute to Rwandan writers.

The research and publication have been a key in academic field for disseminating knowledge and good practices across the world. Recently, Mr. Daniel IYAMUREMYE, a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Science has made a step forward and published two books in the field of Chemistry. Both books will cater for High Schools in senior level.

Mr. IYAMUREMYE noted that the books would serve as a reference to students as recommended by Rwanda Education Board in the department of Curriculum Production Materials and Distribution (CPMD) which is in charge of teaching materials in primary and secondary level.

According to him, the books will boost the academic programme already initiated by the Ministry of Education and will take students' skills to the next level. He added that they fit with Rwandan curriculum as the content has been developed in accordance with the objectives set by Rwanda Education Board.

"Since the books are designed for Rwandan schools, it will help teachers as well as students to get handy materials that can hardly be accessible in other books" he said.

He went on revealing that three more chemistry books have already been published and soon will be on the market. The books will also be taught in secondary schools, Advanced level. However, they differ from the books earlier said since each level (from senior 4 to 6) will be having its own book. All his books were published by The East African Publishers Rwanda Ltd, a Kenyan based Company.

IYAMUREMYE highlighted the absence of publishing houses as the main challenge for Rwandan writers. He said that Rwanda only have printing houses that offers printing services. According to him, the scarcity of publishers in Rwanda is a huge barrier since they help in publishing and distributing books to the market. He did not overlook the challenge of workload as a lecturer to spare time for concentrating on writing and publishing.

"Publishing houses are the real dealers for the writers as they help in the work of publishing and selling as well".

For aspiring writers who need to publish their works, Mr. IYAMUREMYE urged them to identify the publishing houses and partner with them. In so doing, it will be easier to benefit from their works as the distribution and sales are fully guaranteed.

Members of students Genocide survivors (AERG-KIE) in collaboration with KIE staff paid a visit to the Genocide survivors located in Ngoma District, Rukumberi Sector in the Eastern Province. The visit was aimed at comforting the survivors knowing what they went through during 1994.

During the visit, the group constructed a house for survivors and developed a Kitchen garden widely known as 'Akarima k’igikoni' next to his house. They also donated 10 goats to 10 families and provided some household items including soaps, plastic jerry cans and basins.

Rugerinyange Marcel is one of the beneficiaries whose house was constructed. He expressed his appreciation for the activity carried out and said it came when it was greatly needed.

"Activities of this kind comfort us during this period and I am very pleased that I am not alone, thanks to KIE community whom I consider like my family" he said

The Coordinator of AERG in KIE Mr. Theoneste HAGENIMANA said that the idea of visiting Rukumberi's survivors was inspired by this year theme 'Commemorate Tutsi Genocide as we strive for self- reliance'. He added that AERG at the national level had planned the same activity aimed at reaching out to the needy and supports them with whatever is affordable.

"The initiative was to identify widows, orphans and other Genocide survivors with no means and try to improve their livelihood" said Hagenimana.

Speaking on the occasion, KIE vice Rector Administration and Finance Mr. Alphonse KAMALI said that the activity conveyed a message to the Genocide Survivors that despite the horrific times they went through they can confront the past and become as self-reliant.

During the visit, the group also provided seeds and offered guidance on maintenance of a kitchen garden to ensure self-sufficiency. This is an annual visit by KIE-AERG; in 2012 they visited Gatsibo District where they donated money and provided mattresses to the widows Genocide survivors.

Kigali Institute of Education jointly with Umudugudu of IJABIRO held a public lecture in line with the 19th commemoration of Genocide perpetrated against Tutsi.

The talk was opened by Mr. Egide Rugamba who is the Director General of Planning and Monitoring & Evaluation at the Ministry of Local Government. He explained to the audience that before 1994, Rwanda was only reputed as a poor country, landlocked and characterized by internal conflicts. According to him, Rwanda came a long way and urged everyone to be proud of the progress made so far.

Mr. Rugamba took participants through different hatred speeches that were uttered by former Head of States from the 1st Republic to the second and made clear that all of them were nothing less than paving the way to the imminent Genocide.

In as far as self-reliance reflected in this year's theme; he said that it is inherent from local values which are even highlighted in traditional folktales and proverbs. For Instance the saying of 'Urya Ibitamuvuye mu maboko avuga ibitamuvuye mu mutwe'. This means that people who are spoon-fed are influenced by those who feed them. He also took time to elucidate that before self-reliance, efforts should be mobilized to harness the potentiality of the country and empower the nationals while good governance and leadership should not be left behind.

Mr. Theoneste HAGENIMANA who is the Coordinator of the Association of Students Genocide Survivors (AERG) in KIE made a presentation on the role of young generation towards self reliance. He said that on one hand the youth have served as weapons in the execution of Genocide while on the other hand their counterparts were fighting to stop it and put an end to the dictatorship. He went on to say that the youth of today are far from being manipulated and they are on the forefront in the fight against the distortion of the truth by some people about Rwandan history and others with genocide ideology tendencies.

Ms Chantal BAGAYE, a lecturer in KIE said that even though religious bodies played an obvious role in the escalation of Tutsi Genocide, the same have put in place various activities that are meant to reconstruct the country and have done a lot to promote the culture of coexistence among Rwandans.

She also made known the price to remember and elaborated reasons why Rwandans should keep on paying tribute to the Genocide victims.

"We should remember for the sake of not repeating the tragic moments that we went through and we should not give room to the culture of injustice; that is how we will be giving the dignity to our beloved ones that were massacred " she said through her presentation.

At some stage in the lecture, it was underlined that the Rwandan culture should be given momentum given the fact that all Rwandans share it and this should be a uniting factor to help them live together.

Mr. NKUNDIZERA Bertin who talked about 'the culture and self-reliance' said that the government of Rwanda is in process of bringing back traditional values that disappeared during the colonial era. He also added that Rwandans should embrace the culture of dignity and heroism; and the initiation of ITORERO RY’IGIHUGU is a clear case in point to equip youth with key values and morals as a foundation of respect in the society.

During a two day conference organized by the Center for Gender, Culture and Development (CGCD) at Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), a call was made to scholars to research and share findings. The conference aimed to give the recently graduated first cohort Master's students an opportunity to share their research findings at a public and academic forum and to explore ways of publishing their research.

The conference was officially opened by Dr. Marie Christine GASINGIRWA, the Director General for Science, Research and Technology in the Ministry of Education. Speaking to the media, she highlighted the importance of research as it contributes through offering evidence based decisions.

"The quality is inherent from the research findings; therefore, institutions of higher learning and other organizations should get use of research in order to inform their decision making" She said.

Dr. Gasingirwa added that 'only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches' meaning that only researches made on Rwanda by Rwandans in the Rwandan context and culture will be the foundation of people's welfare transformation.

In his introductory remarks, Prof. George Njoroge, the Rector of KIE said that many times in Africa, problems and challenges are identified for Africans and even solutions are dictated for them. He also reiterated Dr. Gasingirwa’s statement about researches that fit the context of the country.

"Lived reality is contextual, and therefore research must be contextual and the experts of contextual reality are those who occupy contextual spaces" said Prof. Njoroge. Besides, he commended the organizers including the CGCD, Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) and other partners for increasing the capacity and qualification of Rwandan women through higher education and research.

The conference brought together students, scholars from local universities and other organizations that are stakeholders in gender research. The conference is expected to come up with recommendations for best practices as a way forward to contribute to strengthening and promoting excellent standards of research and academic work at CGCD and KIE.

The conference was financed by NORAD which supports the CGCD through a project known as 'Increasing Capacity and Qualifications of Rwandan Women through Higher Education and Research'. In the past two years project has provided financial support to various activities at the CGCD such as; supporting curriculum development, providing equipment like computers, books, scholarships for students, paying visiting professors, and offering research and conference support.

Kigali Institute of Education has successfully released Teacher Training Colleges National examinations results. The exercise follows KIE mandate to examine and coordinate the said colleges; the task which was formerly assumed by Rwanda Education Board (REB).

During a press conference, it was noted that only 1,119 among 6,119 candidates who undertook the examination failed to meet the required marks to pass; this figure represents 18, 1 percent. The private candidates form the majority in failure whereby a total of 1119 who failed, 1064 are private candidates.

Speaking to the media, Prof. George Njoroge KIE Rector said that more than 3000 are expected to turn up to the market labour to serve as primary school teachers while those who scored with Distinction would be enrolled in Higher Education most likely in KIE as an institution specialized in teacher Education and will ultimately become teachers in affiliated colleges.

"We aim at strengthening the quality of education as KIE is the only public institution that specializes in teacher education. We were charged with managing and running TTCs to ensure that students in these colleges are well equipped to serve well Rwandan children," said Nzabalirwa.

He went on saying that since KIE assumed TTCs responsibility, students' skills were strengthened as they take three months of internship in primary schools. Language skills too were promoted and students are engaged in macro-teaching which is assessed during national exams.

Dr. Faustin Habineza who is the Head of the Department of Primary Education in KIE and the coordinator of TTC examinations' exercise said that another programme aimed at increasing primary teachers’ skills is on the way. According to him, Kigali Institute of Education will soon launch a Diploma in Education with a view to boosting the number of university students through distance learning.

In the course of 2012 TTC national examination, 300 candidates were qualified with distinction, 219 of them were male and 81 were female. 2701 candidates got credits including 1511 male and 1190 female candidates while the range of pass goes up to 2072 candidates including 774 of males while 1298 of females.

In line with the forthcoming Rwanda National Heroes' day celebration, Kigali Institute of Education organized a public lecture with a view to understand the philosophy and share ideas in the preparation of heroes' anniversary which is celebrated on the 1st February. The lecture was provided by Dr. Alfred Ndahiro who is an Advisor to the President.

Speaking during the lecture, Dr. Ndahiro explained in details the three categories of Heroes which comprise Imanzi, Imena and Ingenzi. He also clarified characteristics and criteria which underpin the selection of heroes in each category. Besides this, he took participants through the achievements that heroes have demonstrated which saw them qualify.

He however, noted that the 3rd category 'Ingenzi' is still under scrutiny by the National Organ in charge of the country's Heroes and Medals and so far no one has been identified to fall in this category. He further exhorted KIE community to carry on their enthusiasm in defending the country’s values.

"Preserving our dignity is another step towards heroism which will ultimately move the country to the next level" He said

In the course of the talk, most emphasis was focused on the fact that heroism should be de-linked with accomplishing one's assigned duties. In this context, it was made clear that heroism means an act of sacrifice that transcends people's imagination.

"We cannot pretend to be in heroes’ footsteps just because we have performed our responsibilities" said a participant adding that only altruistic activities mark heroism.

In his remark, KIE Rector Prof. George Njoroge expressed his gratitude to Dr. Ndahiro and commended KIE students not only for their participation but also the quality of vibrant inputs they showcased which in turn made the whole lecture dynamic. He also urged them to roll up their sleeves; get focused and consider the community and the country in which they live.

"Don't sit thinking that things will happen without you participating; heroism is just a state of mind" said Rector. He added that students should feel free to express themselves because, according to him, it is ideas that will move the country forward.

The Rwanda national heroes' day will be celebrated for the 19th time since its initiation. Dr. Ndahiro challenged participants to be role models and influence the surrounding community. This year's theme is "Heroism is a foundation of Dignity and Development".

Teacher Training Colleges finalists undertook national examinations under the maiden setting and supervision of Kigali Institute of Education. The said practice was duly conducted by KIE following MINEDUC decision to give the Institute the responsibility of ensuring academic quality of affiliated TTCs.

Speaking during the launch that held at Muhanga TTC in the Southern Province, KIE Vice-Rector Academic Prof. Wenceslas Nzabalirwa expressed his satisfaction on the progress of the setting and administration of examinations despite the exercise being the pioneer since the assumption of the duty.

"The whole exercise is under scrutiny, all 14 examinations centers have been contacted and no loophole experienced so far" Nzabalirwa said. He added that the assumption of the duty by KIE is in line with its endeavor to revamp the quality in the education sector by providing well trained teachers countrywide.

"TTCs curriculum is designed for primary schools teachers; however KIE has established other programmes meant to upgrade the level of TTC finalists and the likes of Foundation of Education, Early Childhood Education fall in the category of those programmes" he stated.

According to Felix Shyaka, a candidate in Teaching Modern Sciences at TTC Muhanga, teaching is a special career as it gives insights into every angle of social life.

" As an aspiring teacher, I weighed up my options before joining the field that leads to a teaching career because being a teacher gives one an opportunity to study people's behavior and co-existence in society" he said. He went on saying that he is well prepared to pass exams and become a good teacher but did not rule out venturing into entrepreneurship.

Dr. Faustin Habineza who is the head of the Department of Primary Education in KIE and the coordinator of TTC examinations' exercise said that measures have been taken to ensure the success of the task. He reiterated that KIE is considering improving access to Education by launching outreach academic programmes in the quest to upgrade teachers' level.

In the course of this year's examination, over 6500 are expected to turn up and female candidates form the majority by 54 percent. About 5095 of the total are private candidates. The examinations used to be administered by Rwanda Education Board (REB) before KIE took over.

The call was made during the "Research and Publication" workshop organized by Kigali Institute of Education. The bottom line was the launch of Rwanda Journal of Education (RJE), a compilation of a range of research based articles that mainly cover the sector of education and other related aspects.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Rector Academic, Prof. Wenceslas Nzabalirwa commended the Institute for the initiative as well as the editorial team who contributed for the journal to be a masterpiece. He went on to say that the inauguration of the journal reflects the inevitable KIE input towards the development of Education sector as one of the key hubs of the country’s educational services.

"The Education sector and the country at large have been looking forward to this important contribution to education development," observed Nzabalirwa. He added that Rwanda Journal of Education, being a forum for discussion of new and original ideas in education, will seek to highlight some of the major crosscutting issues in education namely; gender, language in education, ICT, Curriculum matters, special educational needs and inclusion, to mention few.

Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Evariste Karangwa, who is the Journal’s Chief Editor emphasized on the production of original ideas which are not subject to any plagiarism. He added that the journal will be addressing to the wider community which in turn will be an opportunity for critical thinkers to come up with new ideas about education in Rwanda. On behalf of the Editorial Board, Karangwa also hailed the work done by people who in a way or another contributed for the realization of the journal.

"The Editorial Board owes special appreciation to the KIE academic staff as well as other contributors in the education profession and academia whose manuscripts have led to the initiation of RJE" noted Karangwa. He then urged scholars to contribute to Rwanda Journal of Education by bringing new concepts to the critical readers and reading all guidelines underpinning the research and publication available on KIE website.

In the course of the workshop, different articles covered in the Journal were discussed and challenges pertaining to research were elaborated. Rwanda Journal of Education is destined for international accreditation and standards. It envisions a combination of online and print formats with a much wider and international contributions, as a means of rendering its publications more interactive and beneficial to a wider range of critical readers and competitive contributors.

In its quest to overhaul practical demonstration of teaching skills of teachers and graduates, Kigali Institute of Education held an Internship Briefing Meeting aimed at revising internship practice. The new programme stipulates that KIE teacher trainees will be spending the final year of their Bachelor's Degree programme and 6 months of their Diploma programme on Internship in secondary schools.

In his opening remarks, the Minister of Education Dr Vincent BIRUTA, stressed on the vital role of extended internship.

"Research shows that teachers who complete an extended internship programme are far much better than those prepared in more tradition programmes; interns show brighter confidence and are more experienced; thus, internship enhances quality in teacher development" Said Biruta while he called for continuous engagement among all stakeholders in a bid to implement the innovation in the training of teacher of Rwanda. He concluded by pledging government support to ensure quality education to all people.

Addressing to the participants, KIE Rector Prof George NJOROGE urged them to treat interns in the same way they treat other employees at schools with a view to enhance better compliance.

"The interns are expected to fully participate in the activities of the school; you are going to deal with them as you will be dealing with any teacher that you have, it will be part of the evaluation" said Njoroge.

He added that interns are going to conduct research related to the subjects they are teaching at the schools they are in.

"Students could look at the problems the school is experiencing and propose the solutions" He emphasized.

The news came as a relief to the heads of schools that were concerned by the challenge of interns who drop out internship activity and get back to KIE on the ground of completing their research projects.

The meeting brought together Head Teachers, Principals and District Education Officers. The extended internship will come into effect from the next academic year. It will involve KIE students, Kavumu and Rukara colleges respectively affiliated to KIE.

Kigali Institute of Education held a consultative meeting with its former students and staff. The meeting was organized with a view to pave the way for the forthcoming official launch of KIE Alumni Association.

In his welcoming remarks, KIE Rector Prof. George NJOROGE expressed his gratitude to the participants and reminded them the importance of the education they received from KIE.

"The education you received from KIE has contributed to your current status and equips you with knowledge and skills meant to assist you to realize your inherent potentials" said Njoroge. He also insisted on the relationship which will make their mother institution grow to greater heights.

He went on specifying some of the challenges that KIE Alumni would contribute in finding solutions. Among the challenges is the recent 25% budget cut by the government to Higher Learning Institutions; therefore the need of alternative innovative ways in bridging the gap.

"This challenge is not peculiar, universities in the world over faced and continue to face budgets cuts and it is the challenge that we have to face by being innovative using the resources available and cutting unnecessary costs," Rector added.

In his presentation on the Relevance of Alumni Association, Dr. Eugene NSANZABIGA noted that KIE is a nourishing mother but at the same time it needs inputs from former students and staff. For this to happen, he called for joint effort and network of friendship to promote the welfare of the Institute. Nsanzabiga also took participants through major activities that the association would undertake in a bid to propel projects of the mother Institute.

Speaking at the meeting, Joseph NGABONZIZA, the former SUKIE Guild President hailed the initiative and vowed to partner with others in the process of mobilization.

"The idea of creating KIE Alumni Association is commendable and I commit to be among pioneers who will be mobilizing other KIE products to join this Association," Ngabonziza said.

In the course of the meeting, an interim committee was elected. The committee is mandated to mobilize graduates to join KIE ALUMNI Association which will be unveiled soon.

KIE students from the Faculty of Arts and Languages seek to promote Swahili by employing it through debates. The students are grouped into the association CHAWAKIRWA in Swahili "Chama cha Wanafunzi wa Kiswahili Vyuoni Vikuu nchini Rwanda" which is an association of students from Higher Learning Institutions who study Swahili in Rwanda.

Created in 2008, the association strives to promote Swahili as well as uniting students from all Higher Learning Institutions who have Swahili in their curriculum. The association has also stepped in teaching other students who don’t have an opportunity to study Swahili among their courses.

Speaking during the debate, Andrew KAYITARE the Chairman of CHAWAKIRWA said that they are planning to extend the activities of the association further.

"For the time being we are closely working with RTUC but we are planning to collaborate with other Higher Learning Institutions and we also need to reach out the community starting by KIE neighborhood," said Kayitare, adding that High Schools will not be left behind.

Dr. Cyprien NIYOMUGABO, the Head of the Department of Language and Linguistics commended the initiative saying that it matches with the government programme to teach swahili from the foundation schools.

"Swahili has been incorporated among other subjects to be taught from primary level, this move will enhance the government target, which stipulates that every Rwandan should be able to speak basic Swahili by 2015," observed Niyomugabo. He added that debates of that kind will not only help students to increase their level of literacy but also sharpen students’ ability to express their views and ideas in a more confident way.

Speaking to participants, Prof. Wenceslas NZABALIRWA, the Vice-Rector Academics expressed his gratitude to students for their impressive level of Swahili and the flow of ideas showcased during the debate. He noted that Swahili has an economic impact especially as Rwanda has economically integrated in the East African Community, thus the need to harness it as a language of business and job creation.

As for challenges pertaining to finance raised by the chairman of the association, the Vice-Rector pledged support by the Institute for all activities that are meant to promote Swahili.

In line with the 18th commemoration of genocide perpetrated against Tutsi, KIE through the association of members of students Genocide survivors (AERG) launched an exhibition on Genocide history.
In his opening remarks, KIE Rector Prof. George Njoroge urged participants to uphold the truth that genocide happened in Rwanda such that what happen shall not happen again.
“The truth must be upheld, recounted as it is, irrespective of the fact that truth normally hurts, it hurts because it indeed brings us down from our comfort zones…, the history of Genocide shows that others can decide to dehumanize us and deny us our value and rights ”  said Rector.
Prof. Njoroge further recommended Rwandans to act in unity of purpose so that they can defeat evil.
Speaking to participants, Mr. Bideri Diogene the Director General in Charge of Research (CNLG) praised AERG-KIE’s endeavor to organize such an important event which in way underpins remembrance of people who perished in 1994 Genocide. He also made a recap on genocide history and established the dichotomy between Genocide and other crimes against humanity and encourages people to write their story.    
“There is a scarce of writings of Rwandans talking about their history, many have been written by people from outside. We still have time to write; so let us do it,” said Bideri     
Mr Ndizeye Omar, the deputy coordinator of AERG, commended the move saying that the exhibition has a strong relationship with this year’s theme since the history needs to be upheld to build a bright future. He however noted that a lot needs to be done to fight against the denial of Genocide. 
“50 website have been set up do deny Genocide against Tutsi; the activity of this kind is a good move towards genocide denial” Ndizeye said.  
The exhibition will last for three days. It is mainly made of print and multimedia materials that reflect how genocide was prepared and implemented. It shows testimonies of genocide survivors as well.
 

Hon-Minister of Education Giving a Certification To One of Laureates

Thursday, 40 were conferred Certificate awards after completing a six months training in continuing professional development in Special Needs Education or Inclusive Education.

In his speech, KIE Rector, Prof. George Njoroge, congratulated laureates and vowed to ensure that KIE as an institution will engage in cutting edge research in education so as to inform policy and practice of education in the country.   

“We are in the process of launching the KIE Journal of Education as one way of communicating research findings in Education,” said Rector adding that a Center for Inclusive Education project has already been developed, and now the process of approval is on the way.

Mme AYINKAMIYE Emerance, who spoke on behalf of graduates, took participants through some bad treatments: stigma in their families and exclusion in educational system that children with disabilities experience and hailed KIE for the special move.  

“Thanks to the government of Rwanda and KIE respectively for the initiative in promoting education of children with special needs and keeping on carrying out research on what can promote special needs education” noted AYINKAMIYE.          

She also requested policy makers especially the Ministry of Education through NCDC (National Curriculum Development Center) to think about children with disabilities and suggested that the supervision should make sure whether these children   are fully given their rights. 

Mr Mugabonake Gallican who spoke on behalf of Handicap International pointed out some of barriers limiting children with disabilities to enjoy their education right. He also commended the strong technical cooperation with Kigali Institute of Education as one of Higher Learning Institutions that play a key role in educational development by promoting special needs education.    

Speaking to the graduates, Hon. Minister of Education Dr Vincent BIRUTA who was the guest of honor said that the government is committed to make education accessible to all. He also hinted some of bottlenecks against the process of training people with disabilities. 

“We are aware of the shortage of personnel in Special Needs Education, and we shall endeavor to train more”, said the minister; reminding the article 14 which dictates the right to access to Education for children with disabilities and other special needs in education.

The training was organized by KIE in collaboration with Handicap International. The Entertainment was made by students with visual impairment who stunned participants with their vocal talent and proclaimed that disability is not inability.
